An hour spent on crosswords and sudokus burns more calories than are contained in a chocolate chip cookie, brain trainers claim.

Mental exercises such as puzzles and quizzes are said to burn an average of 90 calories every hour – more calories than are contained in a jammy dodger or a chocolate hobnob.

Mental agility expert Tim Forrester from brain training website cannyminds.com which published the claims, said giving the brain a workout burns calories in the same way that giving the body a workout does.

So undertaking activity such as difficult crosswords or challenging sudoku’s means your brain will need more glucose and more calories.

Eight-time World Memory Champion Dominic O'Brien said brains needs work outs just as much as bodies.

"Just as you need to continually exercise your body to stay fit and healthy you also need to exercise your brain and memory to remain mentally agile," he said.

Trailer de "EXAM"

Este parece um promissor thriller!
Aqui fica a sinopse transcrita do IMDB: "Eight talented candidates have reached the final stage of selection to join the ranks of a mysterious and powerful corporation. Entering a windowless room, an Invigilator gives them eighty minutes to answer one simple question. He outlines three rules they must obey or be disqualified: don't talk to him or the armed guard by the door, don't spoil their papers and don't leave the room. He starts the clock and leaves. The candidates turn over their question papers, only to find they're completely blank. After the initial confusion has subsided, one frustrated candidate writes "I believe you should hire me because...," and is promptly ejected for spoiling. The remaining candidates soon figure out they're permitted to talk to each other, and they agree to cooperate in order to figure out the question: then they can compete to answer it. At first they suspect the question may be hidden in their papers like a security marker in a credit card, and they figure out ways to change their environment to expose the hidden words. But light, liquids and other plans all come to naught. Soon enough, the candidates begin to uncover each other's background, prejudices and hidden agendas. Tensions rise as the clock steadily descends towards zero, and each candidate must decide how far they are willing to go to secure the ultimate job."

Farting pig sparks gas leak emergency

Fifteen firefighters and two CFA tankers attended a property in Axedale near Bendigo following reports of a strong smell of gas.

But when they arrived they discovered the source of the gassy smell was a flatulent 120-kilogram sow.

Axedale fire captain Peter Harkins says the pig's owner had alerted authorities.

"He was a little bit embarrassed to say the least. It took us a little while to compose ourselves, to speak to him," he said.

"When we got there, as we drove up the driveway, there was this huge sow, about a 120-odd kilo sow, and it was very obvious where the gas was coming from.

"We could not only smell it, but we heard it and it was quite funny.

"It was fairly obvious what it was. I think we dealt with it fairly professionally and had a bit of a giggle when we got back to the station."

Assaltante de Bancos "apanhado" na tv a comer a nota de pedido que usara no roubo

On Thursday a man entered a First Merit bank in Streetsboro, Ohio, and handed a worker a note that said he would shoot her if she did not give him money, police said.

Shortly after the robbery occurred, police arrested John H Ford, 35, who was driving on a motorway towards neighbouring Twinsburg.

Police handcuffed Mr Ford and were searching him for weapons when, according to images captured by a camera fixed to the dashboard of the car, the suspect gobbled up a piece of paper an officer had just removed from his pocket.

Police in Streetsboro, Ohio said the note was the same as that handed to a bank teller hours earlier demanding cash.

Police appear not to notice as Mr Ford tucked into the note as they were busy searching the suspect for weapons.

Daniel Biada, a Twinsburg police officer, said: "As we're searching him, officers are removing items and throwing them on the cruiser hood.

"We're searching him for weapons. We're not looking at his head."

The whereabouts of the note demanding money came into question after the suspect was taken into custody on Thurdsay and investigators asked whether officers had found the piece of paper.

Police only discovered that Mr Ford had eaten it when they reviewed the images captured on camera.

Electricista atingido por 11.000 volts salvo por...relogio!

An electrician has revealed that his wristwatch might have saved his life after he was hit with 11,000 volts while working.

Steve Edwards, 51, spent five days in intensive care being treated for burns to his face, chest, neck and arms after the horrific incident.

The father-of-four, from Bristol, puts his early recovery after the shock on September 18 down to the skill of nurses - and his metal watch.

The cable jointer, from Bedminster Down, was connecting a high-voltage switch, thinking the power was off, when the charge went through his body.

Mr Edwards said: 'I should have died from an 11,000-volt explosion - I think it was my watch that took the electricity down to earth rather than my body.

'After I was burnt, I was fully aware of what was going on - I can remember coming away and trying to put myself out and then my colleagues threw me on the floor.'

Homem em "coma" 23 anos afinal teve consciente este tempo todo!

Rom Houbens was simply paralysed and had no way to let doctors caring for him what he was suffering.

"I dreamt myself away," says Houben, now 46, who was misdiagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state after a car crash.

Doctors and nurses in Zolder deemed him a hopeless case whereby his consciousness was considered "extinct".

he former martial arts enthusiast and engineering student was paralysed after a car crash in 1983. He was finally correctly diagnosed three years ago and his case has just come to light in a scientific paper released by the man who "saved" him.

Doctors treating him regularly examined him using the worldwide Glasgow Coma Scale which judges a patient according to eye, verbal and motor responses.

During every examination he was graded incorrectly. And so he suffered in silence, unable to communicate to his parents, his carers or the friends who came to his bedside that he was awake and aware at all times what was happening in his room.

Only the re-evaluation of his case at the University of Liege brought to light that Houben was only paralysed all these years. Hi-tech scans showed his brain was still functioning almost completely normally.

Therapy has now enabled him to tap out messages on a computer screen and he has a special device above his bed enabling him to read books while lying down.

When he woke up after the accident he had lost control of his body, "I screamed, but there was nothing to hear," he says.

I became a witness to my own suffering as doctors and nurses tried to speak with me until they gave up all hope.

"I shall never forget the day when they discovered what was truly wrong with me – it was my second birth. All that time I just literally dreamed of a better life. Frustration is too small a word to describe what I felt."
